Computer Scientists Develop Software That Evaluates Facial Expressions

Mona Lisa: Smiling?

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands -- Computers are becoming more and more like humans! Now, new technology allows them to detect what we're feeling!

You've heard the good and the bad about the Da Vinci Code. Now, cutting-edge technology helps unleash another Da Vinci mystery -- what the famous Mona Lisa was feeling.

Have any guesses?

Actually, the Mona Lisa's expression is 83-percent happy, 9-percent disgusted, 6-percent fearful, and two-percent angry.

A computer vision expert in Amsterdam used software developed at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign to design emotion recognition technology. With a Web cam, they map a person's face onto a mesh computer model. It calculates the expression based on facial points like lip curvature, eyebrow position, and cheek contraction -- with 85-percent accuracy.

"That's pretty good, actually, because it's very close to what the human can do," computer scientist Nicu Sebe, of the University of Amsterdam, in the Netherlands, tells DBIS. The software detects happiness, disgust, fear, anger, surprise and sadness, but researchers don't yet have the technology to detect more subtle emotions.

The researchers found George Bush was feeling surprise, fear and sadness during a speech regarding the war in Iraq. Michael Jackson was 33-percent fearful in his mug shot and angry and disgusted as the press snapped pictures after his trial.

Emotion-recognition technology may be used to detect that a driver is getting sleepy at the wheel and have an alert signal and to detect how you feel about certain items while you're shopping ... Proof it takes a look at the past to pave the way for the future.

BACKGROUND: For centuries, art lovers have wondered about the Mona Lisa's mysterious smile, and what Mona Lisa may have been thinking or feeling the time she was painted. Now, scientists in The Netherlands have used emotion-recognition software to determine the Mona Lisa's emotions while sitting for her portrait by Leonardo da Vinci. Other applications of emotion recognition software might be to detect terror suspects on the basis of their emotions, not just on their physical characteristics.

HOW IT WORKS: The software uses a network of points over a 3D model of the face of Leonardo's most famous subject. This looks at features such as the curvature of the lips and crinkles around the eyes to give a score for six basic emotions. The software scored the Mona Lisa for happiness, disgust, fear and anger, but found no evidence of surprise or sadness. The exact breakdown of the Mona Lisa's emotions, according to the software program, were 83 percent happy, 9 percent disgusted, 6 percent fearful, and 2 percent angry.

IN DIVINE PROPORTION: Fans of The Da Vinci Code know that the Mona Lisa smile isn't the only mystery associated with Leonardo's masterpiece. In 1509, he collaborated with mathematician Fra Luca Pacioli and artist Piero della Francesca on a book about the golden ratio: If a line is divided into two unequal lengths, in such a way that the ratio of the longer segment to the shorter segment will be the same as the ratio of the whole line to the longer segment, the resulting number will be something close to 1.618. Some art historians say that within the painting, the relationship between the Mona Lisa's right shoulder and cheek and her left shoulder and cheek forms a golden triangle whose shortest sides are in divine proportion to its base.

ROBOTS THAT FEEL? Emotion-recognition software is part of the field of human-computer interaction, a technology that allows computers to respond to human beings appropriately by reading the expression on their faces. The most famous example is a robot called Kismet, built by researchers at MIT, that reacts to tone of voice and visual cues such as body movement, posture, and facial expression in order to interact socially with human beings. The robot does not experience emotions, but its creators are hoping to create a convincing simulation as Kismet continues to learn.

The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc., contributed to the information contained in the TV portion of this report.

Michael Vaughan retires, leaves a rich legacy behind..!!

Tired of battling poor form and a nagging knee injury, England's most successful Test captain Michael Vaughan announced his retirement from all forms of professional cricket with immediate effect.

"After a great deal of consideration, I've decided that now is the right time to retire from cricket," the 34-year-old Yorkshire batsman said in a statement. Vaughan departs leaving a rich legacy, having won 26 of the 51 Test matches he was in charge of. His achievements include leading England to their first Ashes victory against Australia in 18 years in 2005, something he described as the defining moment of his captaincy.

"I'd like to wish Andrew Strauss and the current England team success in this Ashes series. I know they have the drive, ambition and abilities to repeat the success from 2005. Winning that series was most definitely the highpoint of my career," said Vaughan, whose exit was just a matter of time after the right-hander was excluded from England's pre-Ashes squad.

Vegetarians 'avoid more cancers'

Vegetarians are generally less likely than meat eaters to develop cancer but this does not apply to all forms of the disease, a major study has found.

The study involving 60,000 people found those who followed a vegetarian diet developed notably fewer cancers of the blood, bladder and stomach.

But the apparently protective effect of vegetarian did not seem to stretch to bowel cancer, a major killer. The study is published in the British Journal of Cancer.
Researchers from universities in the UK and New Zealand followed 61,566 British men and women. They included meat-eaters, those who ate fish but not meat, and those who ate neither meat nor fish.
Overall, their results suggested that while in the general population about 33 people in 100 will develop cancer during their lifetime, for those who do not eat meat that risk is reduced to about 29 in 100.

The researchers said they found marked differences between meat-eaters and vegetarians in the propensity to cancers of the lymph and the blood, with vegetarians just over half as likely to develop these forms of the disease.

In the case of multiple myeloma, a relatively rare cancer of the bone marrow, vegetarians were 75% less likely to develop the disease than meat-eaters.

The reduction was less notable for fish-eaters with these cancers. The reasons, researchers said, were unclear, but potential mechanisms could include viruses and mutation-causing compounds in meat - or alternatively that vegetables confer special protection.

There were also striking differences in rates of stomach cancer. Although the numbers of cases were small, fish-eaters and vegetarians were about a third as likely to develop the disease as meat-eaters.

Previous research has already implicated processed meats in stomach cancer, so these findings were not entirely surprising. It is thought N-nitroso compounds found in these meats may damage DNA, while the high temperatures they are cooked at may also produce carcinogens.

But the same reduction for vegetarians was not found with cancers of the bowel, one of the most common forms of the disease.

Meanwhile the relative risk for fish-eaters and vegetarians of cervical cancer was twice that of meat-eaters. The number of cases was small, and could be down to chance but the researchers said it was possible that dietary factors influenced the virus behind cervical cancer.

‘Missile woman’ to handle ambitious Agni-V project..!!

It’s indeed rocket science. And Tessy Thomas is going great guns atunravelling all its complexities. Though women and nuclear-capable ballistic missiles usually don’t go together, Thomas is systematically breaking all glass ceilings in the avowedly male bastion of `strategic weapons’. Thomas has now been appointed the project director (mission) of India’s most ambitious missile, Agni-V, with a strike range of 5,000-km, which is slated to be tested for the first time next year. Thomas, 46, was made the project director of the new advanced version of the 2,500-km Agni-II missile last year after she played a crucial role in the successful firing of the 3,500-km range Agni-III missile as an associate project director, as reported by TOI earlier. Now, she has added another feather to her cap by being assigned to Agni-V, the test-firing of which will propel India towards having potent ICBM (intercontinental ballistic missile) capabilities, largely the preserve of the Big-5 countries till now.
Thomas, contacted by TOI on Tuesday, was reluctant to talk till she `had clearance from the top’. Overall Agni programme director, Avinash Chander, however, was full of praise for her. “She is one of the key members of the entire Agni programme,” he said. “The designer for the missile guidance systems, among other things, she is
one of the most dedicated scientists in our team. She finds solutions to problems,” he added.

A B.Tech from Thrissur Engineering College, Calicut, and M.Tech from Pune- based Defence Institute of Advanced Technologies, Thomas is an expert on `solid system propellants’ which fuel the Agni missiles. Based at the Advanced Systems Laboratory in Hyderabad, Thomas has been associated with the Agni programme for around two decades now. Her fascination for `rockets’ began with the Apollo moon missions when she was in school at Alappuzha in Kerala. The dream turned to reality when this `missile woman’ was assigned to the Agni programme soon after joining DRDO in 1988 by the original `missile man’, former President APJ Abdul Kalam. There are around 20 other women scientists working on the Agni programme but Thomas is the first to become a project director of an Agni system. The work on the solid-fuelled Agni-V basically revolves around incorporating a third composite stage in the two-stage Agni-III, along with some advanced technologies like ring laser gyroscope and accelerator for navigation and guidance. The endeavour is to ensure that Agni-V, for which the government has sanctioned around Rs 2,500 crore, is also a canister-launch missile system to ensure it has the requisite operational flexibility to be fired from any part of the country. It will be slightly short of true ICBMs, which have ranges in excess of 5,500 km, but enough to take care of existing `threat perceptions’.
